The California Zephyr is renowned for its breathtaking views and has captured travelers’ imaginations since it was first introduced. The name refers to two distinct train services: the original service that ran from 1949 to 1970, and the current Amtrak service, which has been in operation since 1983.

Each version of the Zephyr has its own story, offering a unique perspective on cross-country rail travel in the United States.

The Origins of the California Zephyr

The Zephyr trains have a rich history that dates back to the 1930s when the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad (CB&Q) introduced the first streamlined, stainless-steel passenger trains known as “Zephyrs.” These trains could provide a faster, more comfortable, and more luxurious travel experience, and they quickly became popular among travelers.

In 1949, the California Zephyr was introduced as the newest and most ambitious Zephyr train. 

Thanks to the cooperation of three railroads: CB&Q, the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad (D&RGW), and the Western Pacific Railroad (WP), it offered an unmatched scenic route from Chicago to San Francisco. It could traverse some of the most beautiful landscapes in the United States, including the Rocky Mountains and the Sierra Nevada.

The Original 1949-1970 California Zephyr

The original California Zephyr’s route was carefully planned to showcase America’s natural beauty. Starting in Chicago, the train traveled westward through the Midwest, across the Great Plains, and into the Rocky Mountains via Denver. 

The route continued through Salt Lake City and Reno and ended in Oakland, California, just across the bay from San Francisco. Key stops included Denver, Glenwood Springs, Salt Lake City, and Reno, each offering unique sights and experiences.

One of the most famous stretches of the journey was through the Colorado Rockies, where the train followed the Colorado River through canyons and valleys. This stretch was a highlight for many passengers because it offered panoramic views of the country’s most rugged and stunning scenery.

Design and Features

The original California Zephyr was not just about the destinations; it was about the journey. The train’s design was streamlined and modern, with a sleek stainless-steel exterior. 

However, its Vista-Dome cars—railcars with curved glass windows—truly set the California Zephyr apart. They extended up to the roof, providing passengers with unobstructed views of the passing landscape regardless of their seat.

The California Zephyr’s train sets were custom-built for the long journey. The train had several amenities to make the trip as comfortable as possible, including reclining seats, dining cars, lounges, and sleeping compartments. 

The End of an Era

Despite its popularity, the original California Zephyr service ended in 1970. Several factors contributed to its discontinuation, including the rise of air travel and the decline of passenger rail services in the United States. 

The financial struggles of the railroads involved in operating the Zephyr also played a role. By the late 1960s, it became increasingly difficult to justify the costs of running a luxury passenger train. Hence, the California Zephyr made its final journey in March 1970.

The Revival: Amtrak’s California Zephyr

Amtrak brought back the memories and nostalgia of California Zephyr.

Reintroduction by Amtrak

The California Zephyr might have disappeared from the tracks in 1970, but its legacy lived on. 1983, Amtrak revived the name, launching a new California Zephyr service. 

While the route was slightly different, the spirit of the original train was preserved. The new Zephyr once again offered passengers the opportunity to travel from Chicago to the San Francisco Bay Area, but this time, it ended in Emeryville, California.

The modern California Zephyr’s route is similar to the original, with changes in some stops and tracks. The train still travels through Denver, Salt Lake City, and Reno, but it no longer stops in some smaller towns along the original route. However, the focus on scenic travel remains, with the train following the same basic path through the Rockies and the Sierra Nevada.

Modern Route and Service

Today, the California Zephyr is considered one of Amtrak’s premier long-distance trains. The journey from Chicago to Emeryville takes approximately 51 hours and covers nearly 2,500 miles. Passengers can still enjoy the breathtaking views that made the original Zephyr famous, including the crossing of the Continental Divide

The train has modern amenities, including coach and sleeper accommodations, a dining car, and an observation car with large windows perfect for taking in the scenery. While the service may not be as luxurious as the original Zephyr, it offers a comfortable and memorable way to experience cross-country rail travel.

Onboard Experience Today

The onboard experience blends nostalgia and modern convenience. While the Vista-Dome cars of the original train are no longer in use, Amtrak’s Superliner cars offer similar panoramic views. 

Passengers can relax in the observation car or enjoy a meal in the dining car while watching the landscape change from the plains of the Midwest to the peaks of the Rockies and beyond.

One of the most appealing aspects of the modern Zephyr is its connection with the past. Passengers can still feel the history of the original train as they travel along the same route, passing through many of the same towns and landscapes that have been part of Zephyr’s story for over 70 years.
